Side effects are largely dose-dependent, meaning higher doses are much more likely to produce adverse effects. Often experienced within one week of treatment:

• Nausea

• Red urine
• Pain at administration site

And within two weeks of starting treatment:

• Conjunctivitis
• Darkening of nail beds
• Diarrhea

Side effects are, for the most part, reversible once treatment stops.

There is some evidence that epirubicin causes heart problems in some patients. Patients will be encouraged to attend regular doctor checkups to monitor for developing problems, which can occur years later. Likewise a small percentage of patients develop leukemia years after using epirubicin.

Both men and women should avoid conceiving a child while taking epirubicin, as it can cause serious birth defects.
